Dr. Sam Harris

Welcome! I’m a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY34170) based in Los Angeles, specializing in psychotherapy with adolescents and young adults. I invite you to explore my website and reach out for a complimentary 15-minute consultation in order to learn more about the therapy process.

About

My approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that emotional well-being develops within the context of meaningful relationships. With a focus on collaboration, I aim to create a nurturing environment that fosters a deeper connection to oneself and others. Participating in the therapeutic process often leads to an expanded capacity to draw upon internal resources in daily life.

You will find that I am warm, thoughtful, and straightforward in my approach. Since starting therapy can sometimes feel abstract, I make it a priority to explain how I work and why. I primarily practice from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective, integrating cultural influences with individual intrapsychic and interpersonal concerns. When appropriate, I also incorporate Attachment-Focused EMDR into the treatment of trauma. While I tailor my approach to meet the unique needs of each patient, I always use a trauma-informed lens and practice from a place of cultural humility. This whole-person approach not only alleviates symptoms but also addresses their underlying causes, opening up new perspectives and paving the way to a more meaningful and joyful life.

I began practicing psychotherapy in 2014 and earned my doctorate from The Wright Institute in 2019. I completed a doctoral internship at the University of California, Riverside, Counseling and Psychological Services, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Counseling and Psychological Services at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles, CA. I have worked in diverse therapeutic contexts and have extensive experience providing psychotherapy to preteens, teens, and young adults in university-based, community mental health, and private practice settings. I am currently continuing my education in the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the New Center for Psychoanalysis.

SERVICES

  • Adolescence is a time of profound growth, often accompanied by emotional intensity and shifting relational dynamics. My therapeutic approach provides a supportive space to explore the underlying dynamics of feelings, behaviors, and relationships. This process often leads to increased self-awareness and emotional resilience, all while fostering a stronger sense of identity and connection.

  • If you’re between the ages of 18 and 25, you know how stressful and confusing this stage of life can be. Whether you're navigating complex relationships or balancing the demands of school and work, it's normal to feel overwhelmed. With curiosity and warmth, I support emerging adults in deepening their understanding of their emotions and underlying needs.

  • It is common for therapy with adolescents to include meetings between the therapist and parents. This collaborative approach is instrumental in addressing family dynamics, enhancing communication, and fostering a deeper understanding of the teenager's developmental stage. I have found that creating strong working relationships with parents and caregivers results in them feeling more resilient and confident in supporting their teen's growth.

  • Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) therapy goes beyond traditional EMDR by prioritizing flexibility and attunement to your individual needs. While EMDR can be highly effective for processing trauma, AF-EMDR is particularly suited for individuals who have experienced complex trauma and/or attachment difficulties. This sensitive approach helps reprocess stuck memories, reduce shame, and build internal resources to effectively heal trauma.
